Javan Felix swished a short jumper as time expired, sending Texas to a wild 84-82 victory over No. 3 North Carolina on Saturday at Austin and giving new Coach Shaka Smart his biggest victory with the Longhorns.

Felix was left unguarded as players from both teams watched Isaiah Taylor’s three-point attempt in the final seconds bounce off the rim. The ball dropped straight to Felix, who calmly put it in. After a few minutes of reviewing replay video, the game officials ruled the basket good.

Felix finished with 25 points for Texas (6-3) and made five three-pointers. Marcus Paige scored 20 to lead the Tar Heels (7-2), who started the season No. 1.

For Smart, the game was a chance to unveil the potential of a Texas program that enjoyed many winning seasons under Rick Barnes but has mostly struggled in the postseason for most of the last decade.

at No. 1 Michigan State 58, Florida 52: Denzel Valentine scored 17 points, and the Spartans (11-0) moved within one victory of matching the program’s best start.

at No. 5 Kentucky 72, Arizona State 58: Jamal Murray scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half including two of Kentucky’s five three-pointers that helped the Wildcats (9-1) pull away after leading by one at halftime. Tra Holder had 15 points and Kodi Justice added 12 for the Sun Devils (6-3), who outrebounded Kentucky 22-14 in the first half before the Wildcats flipped that number in the second to finish even on the boards.

at No. 6 Maryland 77, Maryland Eastern Shore 56: Melo Trimble scored 18 points, and the Terrapins found their shooting form and used a stifling 1-3-1 press for a 27-11 run in the second half.

at No. 7 Oklahoma 96, Oral Roberts 73: Buddy Hield had 30 points and a career-high five steals as the Sooners (7-0) defeated Oral Roberts for the 14th consecutive time. Hield, a preseason All-American who had been in a shooting slump, made nine of 15 from the field to fall one point short of his career high.

at No. 11 Purdue 95, Youngstown State 64: Freshman Caleb Swanigan and senior A.J. Hammons both scored 15 points to lead four Purdue players in double figures and the Boilermakers improved to 11-0 for the first time since the 2009-10 team won its first 14. The Boilermakers have won every game by at least 12 points.

at No. 12 Xavier 65, No. 23 Cincinnati 55: Myles Davis scored a season-high 17 points and the Musketeers (10-0) ran out to an 18-point lead and earned a third straight win over their crosstown rival.

at No. 15 Providence 74, Bryant 67: Drew Edwards scored a career-high 17 points, including five three-pointers, and usual starter Ben Bentil came off the bench to get 16 points and eight rebounds as the Friars, playing without preseason All-American Kris Dunn, held on.

at No. 18 Butler 94, Tennessee 86: Reserve Kelan Martin had 25 points and 11 rebounds, scoring all of Butler’s points during a 13-4 second half run that sealed the victory for the Bulldogs (8-1).

at No. 22 Louisville 86, Eastern Michigan 53: Damion Lee scored 16 points, all in the second half, and the Cardinals torched another opponent in shooting better than 50% for the seventh time in eight games this season. The Cardinals entered the game leading the country in scoring margin at more than 30 points a game.

at Wichita State 67, No. 25 Utah 50: The Utes (7-2) had 19 turnovers and 14 field goals, while the balanced Shockers made 10 three-pointers and won easily.

at California 63, St. Mary’s 59: Jabari Bird made a go-ahead three-pointer with 15.2 seconds left, then Joe Rahon missed the front end of a one-and-one with 1.7 seconds left for the Gaels, and the Bears defeated their Bay Area neighbors as the programs renewed their rivalry for the first time in more than a decade.
