Kim Clijsters loses to Petra Kvitova in Paris final
Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic stunned Kim Clijsters, 6-4, 6-3, in the final of the Open Gaz de France at Paris on Sunday to win the third title of her career.
Clijsters slammed an ace to save a match point, but Kvitova converted her second match point with a forehand winner.
“I would like to dedicate this trophy to my grandfather, who passed away last week,” Kvitova said. “I played for you.”
Clijsters will still unseat Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark as the top-ranked player when the new rankings are released Monday.
Top-seeded Robin Soderling of Sweden beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, to successfully defend his title at the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament at Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Soderling became only the fourth player to repeat his title in Rotterdam, along with Arthur Ashe , Stefan Edberg of Sweden and Frenchman Nicolas Escude.
Milos Raonic became the first Canadian to win an ATP Tour title since 1995 by beating defending champion Fernando Verdasco, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5), at the SAP Open in San Jose.
Lehman wins on Champions Tour
Tom Lehman birdied the final hole to finish at 13 under par, breaking a tie with Jeff Sluman and Rod Spittle and winning the Allianz Championship at Boca Raton, Fla.
Lehman shot a final-round 69 to win for the third time on the Champions Tour. The 51-year-old former British Open champion had five birdies Sunday, but he bogeyed the par-four ninth and par-three 14th to make things interesting on the back nine.
Sluman had an eagle opportunity at the par-five 18th but had to settle for a birdie and a 69, and Spittle just missed his birdie putt and finished with a 70.
Russ Cochran (70) and Olin Browne (67) were another shot back at 10 under.
Ronaldo reportedly to retire from soccer
Three-time FIFA player of the year Ronaldo will announce his retirement from soccer Monday, according to a Brazilian newspaper.
“It’s time,” Ronaldo was quoted as saying by the website of the Estado de S. Paulo newspaper. “I can’t keep going. I wanted to continue, but I can’t. I think about making a play but I can’t execute it.”
Ronaldo’s agent, Fabiano Farah, didn’t confirm the report but told local media that it is a possibility.
Elisabeth Goergl of Austria won the women’s downhill at the world championships, defeating favorites Lindsey Vonn and Maria Riesch to earn her second gold medal of the competition at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.
Goergl finished the 1.8-mile Kandahar course in 1 minute 47.24 seconds to beat defending champion Vonn by 0.44 and Riesch by 0.60.
It was the first women’s top-level downhill in two years not won by Vonn or Riesch.
Vonn has been struggling with the aftereffects of hitting her head in a training crash in Austria 11 days ago.
The Olympic downhill champion lost her super-G title Tuesday when she finished seventh in an event won by Goergl, and skipped the slalom part of the super-combined Friday.
American Katherine Reutter captured her second straight and fifth overall victory in short-track speedskating this season, winning the women’s World Cup 1,000-meter race at Moscow.
Simon Cho of the United States won the men’s 500 meters in 42.157 seconds for his first World Cup win this season.
Fired Pittsburgh football coach Mike Haywood has entered a court diversion program in Indiana for the domestic battery charge that led to the loss of his job after only 21/2 weeks.
The 46-year-old Haywood was charged in a Dec. 31 attack on his son’s 38-year-old mother at Haywood’s home in Clay Township, Ind.
He appeared in court Friday in South Bend and admitted grabbing the woman.
St. Joseph County prosecutor Michael Dvorak said the victim wanted the pretrial diversion agreement.
The deal requires Haywood to have a psychological evaluation and perform 60 hours of community service. Judge Jane Woodward Miller said the charge will be dismissed in a year if Haywood honors the deal.
Tennessee safety Brent Brewer has been suspended pending an investigation after police arrested the sophomore on a domestic assault charge.
Brewer was free on $1,500 bond Sunday, according to Knox County sheriff’s records.
