Marco Scutaro injury: Watch Matt Holliday’s controversial slide

Marco Scutaro is one tough guy.

The San Francisco second baseman was injured when he was leveled by a controversial slide by St. Louis outfielder Matt Holliday, but he did not leave the game Monday night before delivering a crushing blow of his own to Holliday and the Cardinals as the Giants won Game 2 of the National League championship series, 7-1.

With one out in the top of the first inning, Holliday barrelled into Scutaro behind second base in an attempt to break up a potential double play. Giants fans at AT&T; Park booed Holliday as Scutaro writhed in pain on the ground.

“In hindsight, I wish I would have started the slide a little earlier, but it happened so fast,” Holliday said. “I hope he’s OK, he’s a good guy. I was more interested in breaking up the double play.”

Somehow Scutaro managed to stay in the game and played a key role in the inning that blew the game open for San Francisco. He hit a bases-loaded single that was bobbled by Holliday to score three runs and give the Giants a 5-1 lead in the fourth.

“I do believe in karma,” Giants outfielder Hunter Pence said of Holliday’s gaffe on Scutaro’s hit.

Scutaro, a .362 hitter after the Giants acquired him in July, left the game after the fifth with what the Giants called a hip injury. X-rays were negative. He was expected to have an MRI exam Tuesday.
