U.S. Open: Ana Ivanovic, Petra Kvitova advance in different ways

NEW YORK — Former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic and former Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova advanced into the second round of the U.S. Open on Tuesday, but in totally different ways,

Ivanovic, seeded 13th, looking almost regal with her head held high, ran through Anna Tatishvili, 6-2, 6-0. Kvitova, who notoriously struggles on hard courts, needed three sets to advance past Misaki Doi, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

“I’m very pleased with my performance today,” Ivanovic said. “Once I found my rhythm I sort of felt more comfortable as the match went on. I’ve been playing really well. I’m confident with my game now.

Ivanovic said her focus now is to become No. 1 again. “It’s my only goal I have at the moment,” she said. “I believe I have the qualities to do so. Once you’re at the top, you don’t feel satisfied in the top 15. You really want to aim and push yourself.”

Kvitova’s demeanor afterward was that of a loser more than a winner. “I did not play so well,” she said. “I have to do better.”
