Texas fires defensive coordinator Manny Diaz

A coach from a team that played in the 2005 season’s BCS title game was dismissed Sunday after another woeful performance that riled up the fan base.

Sorry, USC fans, it wasn’t Lane Kiffin. Texas Coach Mack Brown announced he has reassigned defensive coordinator Manny Diaz in the wake of the Longhorns’ 40-21 loss at Brigham Young on Saturday night.

Replacing Diaz will be former Texas assistant Greg Robinson, a former head coach at Syracuse. Diaz will move to another job in the athletic department.

Texas’ defense allowed a school-record 550 yards rushing to BYU, including 259 by quarterback Taysom Hill.

The Longhorns play Mississippi on Saturday in Austin, Texas.

“Our performance on defense last night was unacceptable, and we need to change that,” Brown said in a statement released by the school on Sunday. “Greg will be here tonight and get with the staff and players to start preparing for Ole Miss. He will be running our defense immediately. We’re very fortunate that Greg has been around, watched all of our practice video and has a good scouting report moving forward.”

Texas returned nine defensive starters from a team that finished 88th nationally against the run last year. The Longhorns returned 19 total starters from a 9-4 team and were considered longshot contenders for this year’s BCS title.

Not anymore. Texas (1-1) fell out of the AP poll on Sunday.
