Lions’ Nate Burleson suffers broken arm in car crash

Detroit Lions receiver Nate Burleson suffered a broken arm in a single-car accident early Tuesday. Coach Jim Schwartz stopped short of writing off the rest of the 11-year veteran’s season, but surgery is scheduled for Wednesday.

According to police, the accident occurred after Burleson reached over to keep two pizza boxes from falling off the front passenger seat. His car hit a center median wall on a highway in suburban Detroit and he was taken to a hospital. Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw said there were no indicators of alcohol on the scene or on Burleson’s person after the crash at 2:25 a.m. EDT. The team did not say which arm was broken.

Burleson leads the Lions with 19 receptions, 10 for first downs.

Cowboys lose Spencer

Dallas defensive end Anthony Spencer will have season-ending surgery on his left knee and may have played his last game for the Cowboys.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said on his radio show that Spencer, 29 and a free agent after the season, was likely to have microfracture surgery. Spencer, on a one-year deal and carrying the franchise tag for the second straight season, is making $10.6 million this season

Raiders QB quandary

Oakland quarterback Terrelle Pryor is recovering from a concussion suffered in the fourth quarter of Monday night’s 37-21 loss at Denver on a hard hit to the helmet by Wesley Woodyard. Pryor will not be able to practice until he goes through the league-mandated concussion protocol, which means backup Matt Flynn could start Sunday against Washington.

Violence at 49ers game

A teenage fan suffered a concussion and a broken arm and nose Sunday at Candlestick Park when, police said, he was attacked during San Francisco’s 27-7 loss to Indianapolis. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that a 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of beating the 15-year-old boy. Reports of other assaults at the game were also logged with stadium security.
