Juan Martin del Potro takes title from Roger Federer

Juan Martin del Potro took Roger Federer’s Swiss Indoors title on Sunday, beating the hometown favorite, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3), in the final at Basel.

Del Potro showed an impressive all-around game to help avenge a heartbreaking loss to Federer in the Olympic semifinals at Wimbledon in August.

Federer, who had won the event in five of the last six years, was seeking his 77th title to tie John McEnroe for fourth on the Open era list.

Federer later pulled out of his defense of the Paris Masters, which starts Monday, to rest and prepare for the ATP World Tour Finals in London the following week.

Serena Williams beat Maria Sharapova, 6-4, 6-3, to win the WTA Championships at Istanbul, Turkey, for the third time and finish the year with another title, but not the top ranking.

Williams ended the year with a 59-4 record. Since her first-round loss at the French Open, she is 31-1, winning Wimbledon, the Olympic gold medal and the U.S. Open.

But she will finish the year ranked No. 3, behind No. 1 Victoria Azarenka and No. 2 Sharapova.

David Ferrer won the Valencia Open in Spain for the third time, beating Alexandr Dolgopolov, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

Vettel wins Indian Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel’s seemingly unstoppable march to a third straight Formula One title took another stride with victory in the Indian Grand Prix, though the Red Bull driver’s nearest rival, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari, kept up the pressure with a second-place finish at Greater Noida.

Vettel won a fourth straight race in a season for the first time in his career — completing a clean sweep of the Asian swing — and now leads the drivers’ championship by 13 points with three races to go. He is trying to join Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher as the only men to win a hat trick of drivers’ championships.

Nick Watney missed a chance for a 59 in his CIMB Classic victory, closing with a course-record 10-under 61 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, despite a bogey at the 18th.

The American finished at 22-under 262 and earned $1.3 million in the unofficial PGA Tour event, finishing a stroke ahead of 2011 champion Bo Van Pelt and Robert Garrigus and three ahead of Tiger Woods.

Woods is expected to get a $2-million appearance fee and Rory McIlroy $1 million for their one-day exhibition match Monday in Zhengzhou, China.

Sweden’s Peter Hanson won the BMW Masters for his second European Tour victory of the year, shooting a five-under 67 to hold off Ryder Cup teammate McIlroy by a stroke at Shanghai.

Suzann Pettersen won the Taiwan Championship for her second straight LPGA Tour victory, rallying to beat Inbee Park by three strokes at Yang Mei.

David Frost won the AT&T; Championship at San Antonio, beating Bernhard Langer with a birdie on the second hole of a playoff after overcoming a six-stroke deficit in the final round.
