Tony Romo was only joking when he hinted about coming out of retirement, right?

Tony Romo has found instant success in his second career as a color commentator for NFL games on CBS.

Everyone seems to love the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback in his new gig. He provides lots of great insight and has an uncanny ability to accurately predict plays.

And he’s pretty funny. Check out this comment he made to broadcast partner Jim Nantz during “Thursday Night Football” this week:

After showing a clip of Romo playing in his final game with the Cowboys in January, Nantz said to him, “Your last pass of your career was a touchdown pass against the Eagles.”

To which Romo replied with a smile and a mischievous tone, “Was it the last pass?” — as if to hint that there might be more NFL passes in his future.

Clearly, Romo was joking. For one thing, he laughed and said, “Just kidding,” immediately afterward, although teams like the Browns, 49ers or Jaguars might have missed that part while running to the phone to call Romo’s agent.

Plus, he’s doing a fine job as an announcer, and he likes his work in the booth.

So it doesn’t look like he’ll be suiting up for anyone’s favorite team — but folks can dream, can’t they?
