USC receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster continued his fast start in the Trojans’ 41-31 Pac-12 Conference defeat by Stanford on Saturday at the Coliseum.

Smith-Schuster caught eight passes for 153 yards and a touchdown.

Smith-Schuster had three receptions for 96 yards in the first half, including a 54-yard touchdown. He caught a second-quarter pass from quarterback Cody Kessler over the middle and beat Stanford’s defenders down the left sideline.

The play was reminiscent of Smith-Schuster’s touchdown in the opener against Arkansas State.

Last week, Smith-Schuster caught 10 passes for 192 yards, including touchdowns of 50 and 41 yards.

Smith-Schuster has 22 catches this season for 434 yards and four touchdowns.

Ukropina shines

Former Loyola High kicker Conrad Ukropina kicked two field goals for Stanford.

Ukropina’s 42-yard field goal in the second quarter cut USC’s lead to 14-10.

But his big kick came with 2:27 left, when he converted from 46 yards to increase Stanford’s lead to 38-28.

Marshall starts

Freshman cornerback Iman Marshall started for the first time.

Marshall, who played at Long Beach Poly High, started opposite sophomore Adoree’ Jackson. Senior Kevon Seymour did not play because of a knee injury suffered in last week’s game against Idaho.

Marshall made seven tackles, but struggled at times on longer routes.

Marshall, 6 feet 2 and 200 pounds, had been rotating in the first two games. He had made seven tackles and broken up two passes.

USC has started three cornerback combinations this season.

Seymour and Jackson started the opener against Arkansas State, Jackson and sophomore Jonathan Lockett started against Idaho.

Dawson returns

USC linebacker Lamar Dawson played for the first time since suffering a knee injury about midway through the 2013 season.

He finished with six tackles.

Dawson suffered a rib fracture during training camp and was sidelined against Arkansas State and Idaho.

Dawson, who has 20 career starts, entered the game for the second series in the first quarter as a replacement for senior Anthony Sarao.

No deal

Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said he did not expect a deal to get done this season to make the Pac-12 Networks available on AT&T/DirecTV.

“At the end of the day, what they wanted from us in order to do a deal was much more than what our campuses were comfortable with and we passed,” Scott told reporters before the game.

Scott said there were no further discussions planned and offered no timeline for a possible deal.

“I don’t see anything changing in the foreseeable future, unfortunately,” he said.
