Robert Woods sets USC record, then honors late sibling

USC receiver Robert Woods paid tribute to his late sister Olivia after becoming the Trojans’ all-time receptions leader in a 50-6 victory over Colorado on Saturday at the Coliseum.

As former players congratulated Woods during a video presentation, he pointed to his wrist wrap, which is marked with a large “O” to honor his sister, who died of cancer in 2008 at age 17.

“Just going out there and actually living what she told me — her last words about being a role model,” Woods said. “I just liked thanking her right then and there.

“I just felt like everything she lived for and fought for, that was kind of like a breakthrough.”

Woods, who had eight catches for 132 yards, broke Dwayne Jarrett’s record of 216 receptions on his fifth catch, a 17-yard touchdown pass from Matt Barkley.

Woods’ four touchdown catches also established a school record.

Barkley records

Along with setting the conference record for touchdown passes in a career, Barkley also set several other Pac-12 records.

Barkley’s 19-for-20 passing performance, with no interceptions, gave him an efficiency rating of 319.16, breaking the record of 301.30 established by UCLA’s Drew Olson in 2005 against Arizona State.

His 95% completion percentage broke records set by Washington’s Tom Flick (16 for 17 against Arizona in 1980) and UCLA’s Rick Neuheisel (25 for 27 against Washington in 1983).

Barkley fell short of breaking the national record set by USC assistant Tee Martin at Tennessee. Martin was 23 of 24 (95.8%) against South Carolina in 1998.

Walker injured

Sophomore left tackle Aundrey Walker was carted from the field early in the third quarter.

The 6-foot-6, 300-pound Walker was attended to by USC trainers on the field, then gave a thumbs-up to the crowd as the cart moved toward the Coliseum tunnel.

Williams ejected

Freshman defensive tackle Leonard Williams, who started for the third consecutive game, was ejected late in the second quarter after committing a flagrant foul.

Williams’ actions will be reviewed by the Pac-12 Conference to determine whether disciplinary action is warranted. Had Williams been ejected for fighting, he would have been suspended for a half of the Trojans’ next game.

McAllister moments

Senior safety Drew McAllister made two big plays in the first half to help set up touchdowns.

McAllister intercepted a pass thrown by Colorado quarterback Jordan Webb in the end zone to end one threat.

On the Buffaloes’ next series, middle linebacker Lamar Dawson forced a fumble and McAllister recovered.

Flournoy first

Junior receiver De’Von Flournoy made his first career catch in the second quarter, grabbing a 21-yard pass from Barkley to help set up the Trojans’ final touchdown of the first half.

Linebacker Tony Burnett and safety Gerald Bowman got their first career interceptions.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Max Wittek threw his first touchdown pass in the fourth quarter on a 24-yard play to sophomore running back D.J. Morgan. It was Morgan’s first touchdown.
