Set in a world of epic landscapes and noble castles, cable hit “Game of Thrones” needed talented production designers to bring George R.R. Martin’s vision to life. While many of “GOT’s” recurring sets (like the Iron Throne) are filmed at Paint Hall studios in Belfast, Ireland, the show shoots largely on location, primarily in Northern Ireland and Iceland for scenes in the North, and Croatia and Spain for the South. Cast members who have scenes beyond the Wall have been known to film in freezing weather, often on lands buried in feet of snow.

For all travel fantatics, whether they be “GOT” fans, here is a list of the epic locations used for filming the HBO series, according to Travel + Leisure. (Warning: There are light spoilers ahead.)

The Iron Islands

Scenes featuring the port of the Iron Islands were filmed at Ballintoy Harbour in Northern Ireland.

The Kingsroad

Northern Ireland is home to some of the world’s most picturesque natural scenes, so it stands to follow that the Dark Hedges on Bregagh Road in Armoy, Northern Ireland, were used for depicting the grandest road in the land, otherwise known as the Kingsroad.

Melisandre's birthing cave

One of “Game of Thrones’” creepiest scenes features Lady Melisandre giving birth to a “shadow.” The scene was filmed at the Caves at Cushendum in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

The House of the Undying

When Daenarys’ dragons are stolen staying in the city of Qarth, she’s led to the House of the Undying, which was set inside the walls of Minceta Tower in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

The Great Pit of Daznak

Daznak’s Pit, the largest fighting pit in the Slaver’s Bay city of Meereen, was seen in the ninth episode of the fifth season, when Sir Jorah enters the combat to fight for the queen’s honor. In real life, the Osuna Bull Ring in Sevilla, Spain, stood in for the Great Pit.

The Long Bridge of Volantis

The Long Bridge in the Free City of Volantis — which is depicted in the series’ fifth season — used the Roman Bridge in Cordoba, Spain.

The House of Martell calls the Water Palaces of Dorne home. The Alcázar de Sevilla in Spain served as its stand-in.

Beyond the Wall

The scenes beyond the Wall have been filmed at various locations around Iceland, most notably the Myrdalsjokull glacier, shown, the Hverfjall volcano and the Vatnajökull glacier.
