When the trendy Aloft Harlem opened in late December, it was a rarity: a major new hotel in Harlem. Whether you view this as a sign of progress or gentrification (or both), a stay at the hotel undoubtedly offers a new vantage point from which to explore New York City. The hotel, part of a chain owned by Starwood, is offering a third night free through the end of the year.

The deal: The “Third Night Free” offer requires an arrival date on Thursdays through Saturdays; use the promotion code “Z3H” when making a reservation online or by phone. The hotel is part of a new mixed-use project in Harlem that shares the building with condominiums.

The hotel is also near the historic Apollo Theater and Columbia University. Hotel Chatter has posted a series of photos of the hotel and describes the neighborhood as “still interspersed with storefront churches promising quick redemption and small restaurants serving up fried chicken and waffles.”

When: The offer is good through Dec. 31, based on availability.

Tested: I went to Aloft Harlem’s website and found the deal available for March 25 to 28. The room, with two queen beds and free Wi-Fi and Internet, costs $239 plus tax per night. With the third night free, the rate comes to roughly $160 plus tax per night -- a nice rate for Manhattan.
