Texas: Alamo to mark 175th anniversary of independence battle
Texas, which this year marks its 175th anniversary of independence from Mexico, is honoring the memory of the fighters who died at the crucial Battle of the Alamo with reenactments and a ceremony.
Although the Alamo’s defenders were defeated, the battle on March 6, 1836, in San Antonio was a turning point in the Texas Revolution, inspiring the world-renowned battle cry, “Remember the Alamo.”
On March 5 and 6, reenactments on Alamo Plaza will give visitors a sense of what the battle was like. Another event, “Dawn at the Alamo,” from 6 to 7 a.m. on March 6, will honor both Texans and Mexicans who died in the battle. Thirteen candles will be lighted to remember the 13-day siege, and eyewitness accounts will be read as the sounds of musket volleys echo off the walls of the monument.
