Vancouver: Outgames to celebrate gay athletes

Thousands of lesbian and gay athletes will gather to demonstrate their athletic skills July 25-31 during the North America Outgames in Vancouver, Canada.

Participants will compete in 13 events, including badminton, golf, soccer, softball and tennis at venues throughout the Vancouver area. In Whistler, participants will have both their bodies and their minds tested during an “Eco Challenge,” modeled after CBS-TV’s “The Amazing Race,” in which teams of two will race around a lake and complete a series of tasks.

“It’s a very inclusive event for everyone who wants to take part,” either as an athlete or a spectator, said Outgames spokeswoman Barb Snelgrove. Although some activities, such as the opening and closing ceremonies, will require tickets, many others will be free.

This is the first time that Vancouver, known for its gay-friendly atmosphere, has hosted the games, which will coincide with other lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community activities in the city, including Pride Week.
