Arizona: W Scottsdale hands out a little something extra for July stays

Triple-digit heat sometimes brings out the best at desert resorts eager to woo summer guests. The W Scottsdale offers a random perk for those who stay in July. It could be a free room upgrade or a free pedicure; you won’t know until you go.

The deal: Lucky You rewards guests with a “peel and win” game card good for a variety of hotel extras. Some examples: an upgrade to a suite, a poolside cabana for daytime use, free cocktails for two, a hotel T-shirt and beach towel.

When: The offer is good through the end of July.

Tested: I didn’t travel to the W Scottsdale to check in and get a game card, but I did check rates at the 224-room hotel, which is within the shadow of Camelback Mountain. I found availability for two nights starting July 22 for a room with a king-sized bed for $189 a night plus tax. I do like the idea of the hotel treating me to something that I might not usually splurge on -- no matter what it is.
