Betsey Johnson and Eloise together again -- at the Plaza

Last year, fashion designer Betsey Johnson created an elaborate pink suite at the storied Plaza hotel in Manhattan in honor of its most famous fictional character, Eloise. This year, Johnson has been tapped to design an Eloise Christmas Tree. And pink, not red or green, remains the frou-frou color of choice.

If you don’t know who Eloise is, grab a copy of one of Kay Thompson’s children’s books -- or better yet rent the 2003 movie “Eloise at the Plaza” -- to learn about the know-it-all 6-year-old who lived grandly at the Plaza with her British Nanny, her dog Weenie and her turtle Skipperdee.

The Eloise-themed tree in the hotel’s Fifth Avenue lobby will be officially lighted at 5 p.m. Nov. 29 when Johnson too will make an appearance. A Tree Lighting Tea will be served in the hotel’s Palm Court with goodies such as scallop tartlet with American caviar for adults and strawberry and cream cheese sandwiches for kids. The cost is $79 per adult and $45 per child (reservations: [212] 546-5300 or e-mail palmcourt@fairmont.com). Johnson also has a pop-up store at the hotel that will be open until Jan. 9.

But back to the Eloise suite. The hotel offers a package for kids that comes with lots of Eloise-abilia (an Eloise tea, an Eloise bathrobe, an Eloise book, etc.) and costs $1,495 a night plus tax. Add on an “adjoining grown-up Edwardian Suite” with in-room Champagne and truffles and the price for both jumps to $3,590 a night plus tax.

But for a free Eloise fix, you can marvel at the Christmas tree that will remain on display until Jan. 4.
