‘Million Dollar Quartet’ celebrates 1,000 Las Vegas shows

In 1956, four iconic musicians came together for one night to jam. That rare meeting with Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins is captured in the musical “Million Dollar Quartet,” now ready to celebrate its 1,000th performance on the Las Vegas Strip in August.

The show marks the occasion by bringing in the Las Vegas nonprofit Opportunity Village’s Village Blend vocal group on Tuesday, Aug. 4, in Harrah’s Las Vegas Showroom. Members of Village Blend will take the stage for a one-night-only performance of Perkins’ piano pounding tune “Blue Suede Shoes” during the finale.

The nonprofit, which provides jobs for disabled people, originally manufactured scarves for Presley that he tossed to his fans during his run at the International Hotel in the ’70s.

The musical, which earned a Tony Award on Broadway, takes place on Dec. 4, 1956, when Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” brought together Presley, Cash, Lewis and Perkins at the Sun Records studio in Memphis for the first and only time.

The show includes songs such as “Blue Suede Shoes,” “I Walk the Line,” “Great Balls of Fire,”“Sixteen Tons,” “Who Do You Love?,” “Fever,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Whole LottaShakin’ Goin’ On” and “Hound Dog.”

Tickets start at $62.70.
