At least 41 people were killed and six injured after an overcrowded bus burst into flames in China’s central Henan province early Friday morning, according to the state-run Chinese Central Television.

The bus, which had a maximum capacity of 35 passengers, was carrying 47 people at the time of the accident, officials said.

CNN reported that the six people rescued from the bus, including the driver, were hospitalized.

“The fire was so big that some bodies were burned beyond recognition -- and the death toll is being tallied,” Sun Jun, deputy director of the local government information office, told CNN.

Although the cause of the fire is still unknown, investigators believe the vehicle may have been carrying hazardous materials, state media reported.
