10 Iraqi police are among 16 dead in a wave of bombings

A suicide bomber Sunday killed 10 police officers and wounded 19 others who had gathered at the site of a failed car bomb attack on the U.S. military just north of Baghdad, while six people were killed by a wave of bombings in the nation’s capital, Iraqi security sources said.

A car bomb blew up as a U.S. military convoy passed near Taji, the site of a major military installation north of Baghdad, but caused no damage to the Americans, according to an Iraqi security official. When police gathered by the site, a suicide bomber approached and blew himself up, the security official said.

The deadly attack was the third major bombing against police this month, following Thursday’s double bombing outside the police headquarters in the northern city of Kirkuk that killed at least 27 people, most of them police, and a separate attack on police offices in Hilla south of Baghdad at the beginning of May.

Inside Baghdad, the morning rush hour was marred by a string of bombings that killed six people, security officials and medical sources said. A car bomb in the western neighborhood of Aml killed a policeman on patrol and wounded three of his colleagues. Four roadside bombs blew up in the western Shiite neighborhood of Bayaa, killing four civilians and wounding 15 others. A car bomb exploded inside the eastern district of Sadr City, wounding nine people, and a roadside bomb killed a civilian in an area just outside Sadr City, which is a bedrock of support for Shiite cleric Muqtada Sadr.
