Hurricane Gonzalo makes landfall in Bermuda; 22,000 without power

Bermuda is being pummeled by wind and rain from Hurricane Gonzalo, which has made landfall along the south-central coast, according to the National Weather Service.

The Category 2 storm has sustained winds of 110 mph, with even stronger gusts on approach to the island in the North Atlantic Ocean, but once it made landfall, wind speeds were clocked at 74 mph, with 96 mph gusts, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The hurricane was originally categorized as a Category 3 storm.

About 22,000 people are without power due to downed lines, the Bermuda Electric Light Co. said.

Gov. George Fergusson emphasized that people need to follow emergency updates and stay off the roads, according to a news release.

“I wish everyone all the best, for the next 24 hours. Good luck, and look after each other,” Fergusson said in the release.

Authorities have taken more than 20 emergency calls, The Royal Gazette reported. Those calls included a fire and medical emergencies.
