Fall Vegas running events a mix of fun and challenge

Share

The summer heat is waning, and it’s time to get out and run -- for fun or even for a good cause. Sin City has dozens of fitness events throughout the year, from triathlon competitions to themed runs. Many benefit charities, some are a physical challenge and some are a roving party. Here are a few of the best for the fall season.

Ironman - Silverman: Start getting in shape for Oct. 3! This challenging 70.3-mile race begins with a 1.2-mile swim in Lake Mead, followed by a 56-mile bike over the region’s hilly terrain and finishes up with a 13.1-mile run through scenic residential areas. You’ll be treated to the kind of gorgeous Strip views that make all the pain (almost) worthwhile. www.ironman.com

Color Fun Fest 5K: Lace up your running shoes and practice your dance moves for this day and night run Oct. 18. By day, dance music sets the tempo while runners are doused with vibrant powder. When the sun sets, the world’s strongest black lights create a glowing color run. The family event (kids under 12 are free)has a post-run celebration with deejays and food. Some proceeds go toward charity. www.colorfunfest.com

Las Vegas Zombie Run: Get an early start on Halloween in Sunset Park on Oct. 26. The run/walk benefits local charity Generation Vegas. Each runner wears a flag-football-style belt. If you avoid the pursuing “zombies” and make it through the course with any of your flags left, you’ll be “alive.” If not, you’ll cross the finish line “undead.” www.lasvegaszombierun.com

Las Vegas Challenge - The Ultimate Urban Scavenger Race: Grab friends and family for the annual event on Nov. 16, an “Amazing Race”-style competition. Teams dash around the city, racing against each other for glory (and cash prizes) as they solve mysteries, strategize the best route and explore undiscovered corners of the city. It’s a 5K that tests your brains as much as your legs.
