BMW will recall 134,000 5-series sedans to fix taillight flaw

Share

BMW is recalling 134,100 5-series sports sedans in the U.S. because of an electrical flaw that could cause the tail lights to fail.

The recall affects 528i, 535i, 550i, and M5 cars from the 2008 through 2010 model years.

Over time, the connection with the bulb can corrode, causing increased electrical resistance and damage to the area. This can result in an intermittent or permanent loss of the light’s function including brake, turn and reverse signals.

The problem is showing up in about 15% of the cars. BMW said it is unaware of any accidents or injuries resulting from the problem but said it does create a risk of a collision by failing to warn other motorists of the driver’s intentions.

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear lamp bulb carriers. The recall is expected to begin during October 2013. Owners may contact BMW customer relations at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.
