Hot Property: Steven Spielberg’s latest blockbuster is a $26-million home sale
Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Spielberg has sold his oceanfront compound in Malibu for $26 million in an off-market deal that played out outside of the Multiple Listing Service.
Fronting 144 feet on Broad Beach, the property occupies more than an acre in the celebrity-centric area.
The Craftsman-inspired main house, built in 1992, spans two stories with formal living and dining rooms, seven bedrooms and 10 bathrooms in 7,237 square feet of living space. A massage room and a home theater are among the amenities.
Outdoors, a courtyard with a swimming pool and spa sits adjacent to the main house, while meandering paths lead down to the breakwater. Elsewhere on the grounds is a guesthouse with two additional bedrooms.
Spielberg, 68, acquired the two-parcel property in separate transactions in 1989 and 2000 totaling about $6.575 million. In recent years, the home was floated as a summer lease for $125,000 a month.
The legendary director-producer-screenwriter is known for such iconic films as “Jaws,” “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” and “Jurassic Park.” He has twice won an Academy Award for best director — for “Schindler’s List” (1993) and “Saving Private Ryan” (1998).
Among Spielberg’s upcoming projects is “Bridge of Spies,” due out later this year.
Scripting an exit from 90210
English director-screenwriter James Dearden, whose credits include the 1987 thriller “Fatal Attraction,” and his wife, actress Annabel Brooks, have listed their home in Beverly Crest for sale at $6.795 million.
Offered for lease in recent years at $25,000 to $30,000 a month, the gated estate sits back from the street on more than half an acre above Benedict Canyon.
Built in the 1940s and recently remodeled, the Art Deco-inspired residence has polished stone floors, raised ceilings, wrought-iron details, a media room and a center-island kitchen.
An updated bathroom with a soaking tub and large walk-in closet make up the master suite, which has a private balcony overlooking the grounds. There are five bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms in 5,286 square feet of space.
Fleetwood sliders in the living room open to a swimming pool and sun deck. Set above the pool, a hidden terrace is accessed by a lighted trail.
Dearden and Brooks bought the house in 2007 for $4.695 million.

Dearden, 68, is the son of English filmmaker Basil Dearden and actress Melissa Stribling, known for her role in the 1958 film “Horror of Dracula.” In addition to “Fatal Attraction,” for which he received an Academy Award nomination for best screenplay, he wrote and directed “Pascali’s Island” (1988) and “A Kiss Before Dying” (1991).
Brooks, 57, appeared in such films as “The Witches” (1990), “Princess Caraboo” (1994) and “Last Run” (2001).
‘Dead’ actor sells Venice cottage
Actor Jon Bernthal of “The Walking Dead” and “Fury” fame has sold his storybook cottage in Venice for $1.95 million — $55,000 more than his asking price of $1.895 million.
Built in 1926, the renovated country English home is distinguished by a steep roofline, a curving staircase and a breakfast nook.
The 1,874-square-foot home features formal living and dining rooms, an updated kitchen, four bedrooms and three bathrooms. Curved doorways, original wood floors and a wood-burning fireplace are among the period details.
French doors open to a covered patio and a fire pit, set off by vibrant landscaping. Elsewhere is a built-in barbecue.
The house last sold in 2010 for $1.012 million.

Bernthal, 38, is known for his role as Shane Walsh in “The Walking Dead.” He has also appeared in the crime noir TV series “Mob City” as well as the Netflix series “Daredevil” as the Punisher. Among his film credits is “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013), “Fury” (2014) and the upcoming “Sicario,” due out later this year.
Migrating to a colder pond
Former Anaheim Ducks defenseman Francois Beauchemin, who joined the Colorado Avalanche on a three-year deal worth $13.5 million, has listed his home in Tustin for sale at $3.499 million.
Set on more than half an acre in gated Tustin Ranch, the two-story home features two master suites, a double-height entry and a saltwater swimming pool with a raised spa and waterfall feature.
Interiors with raised ceilings and Travertine floors include a step-down dining room, a living room with a fireplace, a wet bar and a center-island kitchen. The upstairs master suite has a sitting room, a fireplace and a balcony for a total of six bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms in 5,400 square feet of space.
Outdoors, the landscaped grounds contain a covered patio, an outdoor fireplace, a built-in barbecue and a large expanse of grass. A fountain filled with succulents marks the entrance to the home.
The house last changed hands in 2012 for $2.3 million, records show.

Beauchemin, 35, had 11 goals and 12 assists in 64 games for Anaheim last year, his 13th NHL season. His 179 points is second among all defensemen in Ducks franchise history.
Fashionable digs sell for top dollar
The word is out. The New York City penthouse of the late comedian and talk show host Joan Rivers has sold for its asking price of $28 million.
The Upper East Side residence, near Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, encompasses the top three floors of a 1903 mansion converted to condos in the 1930s.
Many of the original Gilded Age architectural details were restored during Rivers’ ownership. The resulting palace-like interiors are opulent and can accommodate grand-scale entertaining.
A ballroom and music room with Louis XIV-inspired decor, for example, feature 23-foot ceilings, crystal chandeliers, antique paneling and columns, tall windows and two fireplaces.
The penthouse also has more intimate spaces among its 11 rooms, such as a wood-paneled library with a fireplace and curved windows that look out on one of the penthouse’s two terraces. French doors off the dining room open to the other terrace. A second-floor mezzanine overlooks the ballroom and music room.
The master bedroom suite and separate two-bedroom, two-bathroom guest quarters with a living room and kitchen are within the 5,100 square feet of living space.
Views take in Central Park and the Manhattan skyline.
Rivers, who died last year at 81, gained notice in the 1960s as a guest on “The Tonight Show.” Two decades later she went on to host “The Late Show With Joan Rivers” and “The Joan Rivers Show.” She co-hosted “Fashion Police” from 2010 to 2014.
