Two former executives and a lawyer from accounting firm KPMG have been sentenced in what the government once touted as the biggest tax fraud case ever.

Judge Lewis Kaplan sentenced the men Wednesday in New York. Former KPMG executive John Larson received 121 months in prison. Fellow executive Robert Pfaff received 97 months.

The judge said both had leadership roles in the scheme to help rich people evade more than $1 billion in taxes. Lawyer Raymond Ruble has been sentenced to 78 months in prison.

The men were convicted in December of multiple counts of tax evasion. The government said they used tax shelters marketed by KPMG to help wealthy clients make it appear as if they had sustained large tax-deductible losses when they had not.
