Attendance down at L.A. County Fair
The pig races were competitive, the entertainment featured Lynyrd Skynyrd and Kesha, and the food was more decadent than ever.
Yet attendance at the Los Angeles County Fair in Pomona was down from a total of 1,473,371 last year to 1,438,514 this year, fair officials reported Monday.
Fair officials were hopeful earlier this summer that they could surpass the attendance record of 1,491,213, set in 2011.
Still, fair officials put an optimistic spin on this year’s numbers, noting that the fair drew the fifth-highest attendance numbers in its 91-year history. They noted that the weather was extremely hot and humid during the first two weeks of the fair.
Revenue from food sales and carnival tickets were either even or higher than those from last year, said Michelle DeMott, a spokeswoman for the event. The fair has yet to release the sales figures.
“We are very pleased with the results,” she said, noting that fair guests also donated heavily to food and blood banks this year.
The fair ended this weekend after a 24-day run that included horse racing, pig racing, marching band competitions and performances by classic rock, country and hip-hop performers. The event ended with a performance by the rock band Bad Company.
