Google’s $199 Nexus 4 sells out, won’t be restocked

Share

After cutting the price of the 8 gigabyte Nexus 4 down to $199, Google has sold out of the smartphone just a few days later -- and the device may not be going back on sale.

Google cut the Nexus 4’s price by $100 on Wednesday, making it a great bargain for consumers looking for a new device without a service contract. For just $199, users could get a nearly top-of-the-line gadget with no strings attached to a carrier.

That price cut seems to have quickly worked, as the Nexus 4 is now listed online as “out of inventory.”

The Google Play online store tells consumers to “check back soon,” but in the U.S., the Nexus 4 may be sold out for good. According to The Verge, Google said the popular device will not be restocked.

Google could not be reached to confirm the comment, but if true, then it appears the tech giant rolled out the Nexus 4 price cut as a way to clear inventory ahead of this year’s new Nexus smartphone. That device, which would presumably be called the Nexus 5, is expected to go on sale as early as October.

As for consumers who might still be interested in the Nexus 4, you are not completely out of luck.

For $249, you can still purchase the 16 GB version of the Nexus 4. But you might want to buy it fast because it could sell out too.
