President Obama’s Q&A; session sets Reddit traffic record

Share

President Obama was a big hit on Reddit, so much so that he helped set an all-time traffic record for the popular social news website.

The session, known as an “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit, registered more than 4 million visits since it went live Wednesday afternoon. At one point, as many as 200,000 people were on the site at the same time, which significantly surpassed Reddit’s previous high of 130,000 concurrent visitors.

When asked why Obama chose to participate in the Reddit Q&A;, the Obama campaign said it was a chance for the president to interact with Reddit’s robust community.

“More than 40 million people use Reddit every month and the President’s ‘Ask Me Anything’ session was a great opportunity to answer questions from this group directly,” said Adam Fletcher, deputy press secretary for Obama for America, in an email statement.

As a result of the session, the Obama campaign said more than 25,000 people registered to vote, “including at least one 98-year-old.”

Obama included the link on voter registration at the top of his thread in his closing update, where the president also shared his thoughts on the experience.

“By the way, if you want to know what I think about this whole reddit experience - NOT BAD!” he said, referencing his popular meme.

People are still posting to the thread. Late Wednesday, more than 12,900 comments and questions had been posted. That number has grown to more than 19,500.
