Early Hitchcock film premieres on the web

The 1923 British film, “The White Shadow,” which is the earliest surviving feature credited to Alfred Hitchcock -- he was the film’s assistant director, writer, editor and production designer -- will be screening on the National Film Preservation Foundation website beginning Thursday morning.

Thirty minutes of this long-forgotten film starring Betty Compson and Clive Brook was discovered last year in the New Zealand Film Archive. The film was preserved through a partnership of the NFPF, the Academy Film Archive and the NZFA and had its “re-premiere” in September 2011 at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

The film will be streamed at https://www.filmpreservation.org for two months with a scored created by Michael M. Mortilla and film notes by David Sterritt.

Funds for the presentation were raised in May through the NFPF’s “For the Love of Film” blogathon.
