Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper back together in ‘Serena’ trailer

Jennifer Lawrence’s and Bradley Cooper’s long-in-the-making Depression-era drama “Serena” may not have a U.S. release date yet, but audiences can get a glimpse of the dynamic duo’s third film together via a newly released trailer.

Directed by Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier (an Oscar winner for foreign-language film in 2011, for “In a Better World”), “Serena” tells the story of a North Carolina timber baron (Cooper) and his enterprising new wife (Lawrence), who doesn’t take kindly to finding out that her husband has a son from a previous relationship. Production on “Serena” began in 2012, on the eve of “The Hunger Games” making Lawrence a global star and before the success of “Silver Linings Playbook” and “American Hustle,” which earned back-to-back Oscar nominations for both actors and a statue for Lawrence.

Given the star power and Oscar pedigree of those involved, one can’t help but wonder what’s taking “Serena” so long to reach the screen, and why it has yet to capitalize on Lawrence’s and Cooper’s hot streaks. Bier took a year and a half to complete the film, and protracted productions rarely bode well for the final product.

In November, when “Serena” was being shopped to distributors, the Hollywood Reporter quoted an unnamed person close to the film as saying it was in good shape. “There were no reshoots or anything like that,” the person said. “It was just a real precision edit because the story is about a woman’s descent into madness. And Susanne is a total perfectionist.”

Take that with a grain of salt, of course, and note that Bier has already made and premiered another movie, “A Second Chance,” since starting “Serena.”

“Serena” is set to bow at the London Film Festival next month and opens in Britain on Oct. 24; Magnolia Pictures is distributing the film in the U.S., with a release planned sometime next year.
