Maggie Simpson animated short makes the first Oscar cut
Gracie Films’ “The Longest Daycare,” starring perennial baby Maggie Simpson and directed by David Silverman, has moved forward in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ animated short race along with Disney Animation Studios’ short “Paperman,” directed by John Kahrs.
Pixar Animation Studios, often a strong contender in the shorts category, did not enter this year. The short that accompanied their blockbuster “Brave” this year was “La Luna,” one of the Oscar nominees in last year’s race.
The other eight films that moved forward in the category are:

“The Fall of the House of Usher,” Raul Garcia director, Stephan Roelants producer (Melusine Productions, R&R; Communications Inc., Les Armateurs, The Big Farm)
“Fresh Guacamole,” PES director (PES)
“Head over Heels,” Timothy Reckart director, Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly producer (National Film and Television School)
“Tram,” Michaela Pavlátová director, Ron Dyens producer (Sacrebleu Productions)
The shorts were reviewed by the short film and feature animation branch. They list will be pared down to either three or five entries and announced on nomination morning, Jan. 13, 2013.
The Academy Awards will be held Feb. 24 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
