Remember the giant worm monster movie “Tremors” starring Kevin Bacon and Reba McEntire from 1990? Well, surprise: the “Tremors” movie franchise is still going and the graboids are on their fifth installment. And the fifth one is set in South Africa, because why not? Watch the trailer now.

For those of you unaware of the long “Tremors” history, let’s break it down.

First there was “Tremors,” a monster-movie-meets-grade-school-hot-lava-game (co-produced by Gale Anne Hurd). The first film was centered around a group of civilians from Perfection, Nev., who encounter a group of flesh-hungry, gigantic desert worms (dubbed graboids) that can tunnel underground.

The original film also introduced fan favorite (and “Tremors” staple) Michael Gross as Burt Gummer, the gun-toting, graboid-killing machine. Gross would continue on to make “Tremors 2: Aftershocks,” “Tremors 3: Back to Perfection,” “Tremors 4: The Legend Begins” (where he played a past version of himself in the wild West, also hunting graboids) and now “Tremors 5: Bloodlines.”

In this fifth installment, Gross is joined by by Jamie Kennedy who, according to the synopsis, is the new “sidekick.” Magnificent. Together they journey to South Africa to hunt a brand new version of the graboids.

Fun “Tremors” fact: As the movies evolved, so have the monsters. In “Tremors 2” the “shrieker” appeared, a version of evolved graboid that could walk; however, the creature’s vision was limited to the infrared part of the spectrum. No doubt the fifth movie will have yet another iteration of the graboid. But really, all this film needs to entertain fans is Gross shooting at dirt while a gaggle of frightened actors jump around trying to avoid a giant underground worm monster.

The latest “Tremors” installment will be available Oct. 6 on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD.
