Michael Wittenberg, 43, husband of Broadway musical-theater star Bernadette Peters, died Monday in a helicopter crash in Montenegro. Wittenberg, an investment advisor, was on a business trip, Judy Katz, a spokeswoman for the Tony Award-winning actress, told Associated Press on Tuesday.

Three other people were killed in the crash, which occurred when the aircraft struck a high-voltage cable, police in Podgorica, Montenegro, said.

The couple met in front of Peters’ apartment building in New York City.

“I was just standing [there] waiting for somebody and he walked by,” she told USA Today. “He was wearing a tuxedo and I was all dressed up and he said, ‘Well, are you ready to go?’ ”

They were wed -- the first marriage for both -- in July 1996 at the home of Mary Tyler Moore, a longtime friend of Peters.

Peters most recently appeared on Broadway in the 2003 revival of “Gypsy.” Her other Broadway shows include “Sunday in the Park With George” and “Into the Woods.” She won Tonys for her performances in “Song & Dance” and the 1999 revival of “Annie Get Your Gun.”
