Racing! Looking for a good day of racing at Santa Anita

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we get ready for a good weekend of racing.

It’s a pretty busy day in racing on Saturday. In addition to the second day of the National Horseplayers Championship (NHC), there is a nice card at Santa Anita. So nice, in fact, that the track is going with a special noon start with their 10-race card.

The most interesting race is the Grade 2 $200,000 San Vicente Stakes for 3-year-olds over seven furlongs. If you remember two years ago, the San Vicente was probably the best seven-furlong race I’ve seen live. It was Nyquist vs. Exaggerator. The smart thinking was Exaggerator was poised for an upset. But Nyquist took everything Exaggerator could bring and then some. Great race. Here it is if you missed it.

Today’s race is highlighted by Ax Man, who won his first race by 9½ lengths. Hal Earnhardt is the owner and Bob Baffert is the trainer. It’s an interesting story. And, you can read all about it here.

We’ll get to the other two stakes races later in the newsletter.

And before we get to a summary of what happened at the NHC, Rob Henie, who is playing in the tournament, sends along his weekly handicapping session.

A handicapping lesson

Here’s this week’s contribution from Henie, of the WCHR (West Coast Handicapping Report) and the ECHR (East Coast Handicapping Report). The thinking is by breaking down a race in detail you can learn to handicap like the pros.

His analysis is for the eighth race at Santa Anita. All yours, Rob.

“This is an optional 40,000 claimer at a mile on the TURF. Top selection is TONY BLACKJACK (#7). Off the layoff last time out, they won going 6 furlongs, and NOW, they send a mile on the TURF. This is a VERY WELL MEANT RUNNER based on their placement. If they loved the dirt sprint for him so much, why not return to the same conditions? Instead, what likely transpired was, they used a dirt sprint off the time away, knowing the turf route was the goal, and in the process, got up for the win. Three drills since the last race further tell us he’s doing well, and a good effort is coming. CALIFORNIA JOURNEY (#4) is interesting off the debut win and long layoff. Chew could either give the race, meaning, likely a dirt sprint, or, send long on the sod as they did in the debut win, choosing the latter here. Again, INTENTIONS and placement is so important when handicapping. And, trying to decipher the mindset of those around the horse is so key.

“Race Outlook: Multiple runners would be useful.

“Win Contenders (order of preference): 7-4-1

“X Out Runners (eliminating on the win end): none

“Positive Notes:

“1 Tartini - Carava only uses Bejarano with live runners, and usually those where he wants late run from the horse.

“Negative Notes:

“6 Sawyer’s Hill - Off the layoff, IS eligible to be claimed. Remember, this is an OPTIONAL claimer so why affix the claim price if the horse was doing great?

“TOP PICK: TONY BLACKJACK (#7 5-1 Talamo)

“SECOND CHOICE: CALIFORNIA JOURNEY (#4 15-1 Baze)”

The West Coast Handicapping Report can be found at www.westcoasthorseracing.com. It has been endorsed by leading trainers, handicappers and industry sources.

NHC update

Day 1 of the NHC started to separate the field, undoubtedly making the lower half more inclined to bet longshots, or shall we say even longer shots, on Saturday.

Here’s the top 10 standings:

1. Michael Ryan 150.8

2. Paul Langley 148.7

3T. Jonathan Zvara 146.8

3T. John Farrar 146.8

5. Keith Fenton 138.8

6. Jeff Bussan 137.0

7. Matthew Ransdell 134.6

8. Barbara Stubblebine 133.8

9. Steve Rooney 130.9

10. Dave Decauwer 124.9

Couple of quick notes.

—Defending champion Ray Arsenault was tied for 312th after the first day last year. This year he's tied for 332nd with his first seat and tied for 669 with no money on his other hand.

—Is this a tournament for veterans? Jonathan Zvara is 25 years old and tied for third. Try asking him about what he thought when he saw Secretariat run.

Our regular handicappers struggled a bit, although in fairness, they were both rookies. Rob Henie, with two entries, was in 336th place with 43.6 points and 373rd place with 42.4. Bob Ike was further back in the pack.

As on Friday, there are eight mandatory races on Saturday and 10 optionals for the entrants.

Here’s a look at the mandatories, and remember, you can play along for free — for entertainment purposes only. All times PST.

Santa Anita review

Show It N Moe took Friday’s allowance feature by a commanding 3¾ lengths in the $56,000 feature race for 3-year-old fillies over 6½ furlongs … and on the dirt, not the turf.

The filly was trained by Gary Sherlock and ridden by Rafael Bejarano and was the only Cal-bred in the race. She paid $10.60, $5.20 and $3. Secret Spice was second.

“We’ll point her to the Evening Jewel [$200,000 at 6½ furlongs] on Santa Anita Derby day [April 7],” Sherlock told Mike Willman of Santa Anita. “Rafael really fits her well.”

Santa Anita preview

Saturday’s card is a very good one with full fields except for the three stakes races. It has four turf races — the third, fifth, eighth and 10th. They also get rid of the stakes races early (no doubt to keep the five-horse fourth out of the pick six and the late pick four out of the two six-horse fields.) They can be found in the fourth, fifth and sixth races.

If you’ve never seen Eclipse Award-winning Unique Bella, here’s your chance. She’s the 3-5 favorite in the Grade 2 $200,000 Santa Maria Stakes for older fillies and mares over 1 1/16 miles. She’s won six of eight races although didn’t look as dominant in her last race, winning the La Brea by three-quarters of a length. Mopotism, who won her last race, the La Canada, is the 4-1 second choice. Post time is a little after 1:30 p.m.

The second stakes on the card is the Grade 3 $100,000 Thunder Road Stakes for older horses going a mile on the turf. Blackjackcat is the 6-5 morning-line favorite in the six-horse field. He was third in the Breeders’ Cup mile, which should make him a strong favorite here. He won four of seven races last year. Om, the 3-1 second choice, was eighth in that BC race, but it’s been a long time since this horse has won.

And if you want a preview of the Grade 2 $200,000 San Vicente, here’s the story we referenced at the top.

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day

NINTH RACE No. 11 Liberty Jack (10-1)

Gelding from the red-hot Billy Morey barn swept by to beat soft maiden claimers in his comeback race and might be able to stand the raise at a good price. If the race develops with a hot pace, he could be along in time.

Friday result: Agent Nine T Nine was scratched from the ninth race.

Bob Ike is a Partner/VP of Horsebills.com and the proprietor of BobIkePicks.com (full-card picks, 3 Best Plays and betting strategy).

Chris Wade’s LA play of the day

RACE THREE: No. 3 Lilac Street (6-5)

She went well for third versus much tougher 15 nights ago at the speed-sharpening distance of 4 furlongs. This filly chased a well meant victor throughout while putting up a solid figure for this evening’s endeavor. Will be the one to catch on the stretch-out for a super jockey/trainer (50%) combo as the deserving favorite

(Note: Don’t worry, Ed Burgart hasn’t gone away, he’s just on vacation.)

CASCADE ROCK (IRE) saved ground stalking the pace, came out into the stretch, bid outside the runner-up then gained the lead past midstretch and gamely prevailed under some left handed urging. GOSILENTLY had speed between horses, took the lead a bit off the rail then angled in, set a pressured pace inside, inched away on the second turn, fought back inside the winner through the final furlong and went willingly to the end. FRANKINCENSE chased outside a rival then a bit off the rail into and on the second turn, continued alongside a foe into the stretch, came out in the drive and gained the show. ZICONIC broke a bit slowly then dropped back just off the rail without early speed, continued inside on the second turn and into the stretch, came out in upper stretch and lacked the needed rally three deep on the line. COMBAT ZONE saved ground chasing the pace, came out on the second turn and alongside a rival into the stretch and could not offer the needed response while between horses late. PAPA JAZZ three deep early, prompted the pace outside the runner-up, stalked off the rail leaving the second turn, angled to the inside into the stretch and weakened.
