NBA: Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook scores 51 with a triple-double

Russell Westbrook had 51 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists and also accounted for the winning points Friday as the Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the visiting Phoenix Suns, 113-110, in overtime.

According to the Thunder, it was the first triple-double with at least 50 points since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had one in 1975.

Westbrook, who took a career-high 44 shots and made 17, scored on a layup to put the Thunder ahead, 111-110, with 7.6 seconds remaining. Phoenix’s Devin Booker missed a layup and Westbrook was fouled and scored his 50th and 51st points at the free-throw line with 3.5 seconds left. Booker missed a three-point shot as time expired.

Westbrook has 38 career triple-doubles. He scored 39 points in the second half and overtime.

Cleveland 94, at Toronto 91: Kyrie Irving had 26 points and LeBron James scored 21, helping the Cavaliers hold off DeMar DeRozan and the Raptors in the first of four games scheduled between last season’s Eastern Conference finalists. DeRozan scored 32 points.

Golden State 122, at New Orleans 114: Kevin Durant had 30 points, 17 rebounds and six assists, and the highly touted Warriors scraped past the Pelicans for their first win of the season. Anthony Davis, who scored 50 points in the season opener, had 45 points and 17 rebounds for New Orleans.

Houston 106, at Dallas 98: Trevor Ariza scored 27 points and James Harden had 26 for the Rockets. A stomach ailment caused Dirk Nowitzki to sit out a home opener for only the second time in his 19 seasons with the Mavericks.

Charlotte 97, at Miami 91: Kemba Walker had 24 points to lead six Hornets in double figures, and Charlotte erased a 19-point second-half deficit. Hassan Whiteside had 20 points and 15 rebounds for the Heat, who lost a home opener for the first time in nine years.

at Detroit 108, Orlando 82: Andre Drummond had 12 points and 20 rebounds, and the Pistons won what might have been their final home opener at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Owner Tom Gores said the team is close to a deal to move downtown next season.

at Brooklyn 103, Indiana 94: Jeremy Lin just missed a triple-double in his Nets home debut, finishing with 21 points, nine rebounds and nine assists.
