Earthquake: 3.4 quake strikes near Niland, California

A shallow magnitude 3.4 earthquake was reported Thursday evening six miles from Niland, Calif., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 8:07 p.m. at a depth of 3.1 miles.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was 24 miles from Brawley, Calif., 33 miles from Imperial, 37 miles from El Centro, and 199 miles from Phoenix, Arizona.

In the last ten days, there have been no earthquakes magnitude 3.0 and greater centered nearby.
