An earlier version of this post incorrectly said the investigation took seven months. In fact it took five.

Milton Olin, 65, suffered fatal head trauma and numerous other injuries in the Dec. 8, 2013, accident in the 22400 block of Mulholland.

Olin and the deputy were heading east on a single-lane road when they collided in the bike lane, officials said.

Olin, a prominent entertainment industry attorney, was pronounced dead at the scene. Wood suffered cuts and other minor injuries.

According to the coroner’s report, Olin appeared to be wearing earphones connected to an iPhone at the time of the collision.

The Sheriff’s Department apologized publicly to Olin’s family after the accident.

An autopsy determined that Olin died of multiple blunt-force injuries. A music veteran, Olin was counsel for Altschul & Olin LLP, which he co-founded, and had been practicing law since 1975, according to court documents and the State Bar of California.

Wood, a 16-year veteran with the department, has since returned to work but has transferred to another unit, officials said.
