A truck carrying about 40,000 pounds of French fries went off the freeway and caught fire on the Grapevine early Sunday morning.

The California Highway Patrol responded shortly after 2:30 a.m. to a report of a truck, with "a lot of smoke" coming out, in a ditch off southbound Interstate 5 just south of the Whitaker brake-check area.

The truck slid about 30 feet down an embankment and landed on its side. The driver was uninjured. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Two lanes of traffic were blocked for most of the morning. CHP officials said the truck had to be unloaded before it could be turned upright and towed.
