Big rig crash shuts down northbound Interstate 5 at Gorman

Share

All northbound lanes of Interstate 5 were closed at Highway 138 early Tuesday after three big rigs collided in Gorman, sending metal beams across the highway and seriously injuring one driver.

The California Highway Patrol closed northbound lanes after the crash about 1:30 a.m. Monday. Some lanes were briefly reopened before sunrise, but about 6 a.m. the CHP completely shut down the main artery from Southern California to the San Joaquin Valley.

Traffic was being diverted to Highway 138, said CHP Officer Scott Jobinger. Drivers can take the first left turn off the highway, onto Gorman Post Road, where they can eventually reconnect with the northbound I-5.

CHP logs show one of the big rigs jackknifed and another big rig crashed into it. Metal beams from one of the trucks slammed through the cab of another. One driver was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries, Jobinger said.

The crash remained under investigation.
