UC Santa Cruz seeks $300 million in donations

UC Santa Cruz has raised $150 million in donations over the last four years and will seek another $150 million to support students, research and campus facilities, officials announced Friday.

In all, the $300-million target was unveiled and celebrated at a campus luncheon Friday attended by UC Santa Cruz Chancellor George Blumenthal and new UC system President Janet Napolitano.

“You have a great chancellor, a great faculty, great research facilities and a great student body. Let’s add some money and mix,” Napolitano said, according to a campus statement.

Since July 2009, when the campus began the campaign’s “quiet phase,” more than 40,000 donors have pledged or contributed more than $150 million. Officials said they expect an equal amount to be raised over the next four or five years.

As state support for UC declined during the recession, administrators have been looking for more private funding to fill the gap.

Blumenthal described his campus as being “an incubator for new ways of thinking, new ways of learning and new ways of taking action in the world.”
