Man stuck upside down between rocks at Mission Beach jetty is rescued

A man suffered several injuries after he fell and became trapped upside down between rocks at the Mission Beach jetty Monday night, a San Diego lifeguard official said.

The man was walking on the rocks surrounding the jetty when he fell head-first into a gap, lifeguard Lt. John Sandmeyer told San Diego News Video. Two passersby who heard him yelling for help found the man with his legs danging in the air about 8:20 p.m.

Sandmeyer said the man’s body apparently did not touch the water.

The bystanders helped the man until medics and lifeguards found them, Sandmeyer said. The man suffered injuries to his head, neck and a shoulder, Sandmeyer said.

He was hoisted onto a helicopter, then taken to shore where medics were waiting.

Sandmeyer said it took 20 minutes to find the man and another 30 minutes to rescue him.

Using infrared and thermal-imaging cameras, personnel on a lifeguard boat and a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department helicopter also scoured the ocean for some time because the man told lifeguards he had been with friends who possibly were still in the water. However, there were no signs of anyone in the water, Sandmeyer said, adding that the good Samaritans who assisted in the rescue said they saw people walking away on the rocks.

“We feel pretty strongly that there is nobody else out in the water or out on the jetty,” Sandmeyer said.
