A 12-year-old boy who was visiting a friend in Paramount was accidentally shot and killed Thursday night, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The shooting occurred shortly before 7 p.m. in the 16400 block of Virginia Avenue, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Diane Hecht. The boy was struck in the upper torso and died at the scene.

No arrests have been made.

Investigators were looking into how the victim and his 14-year-old friend obtained the gun, Deputy Harry Drucker said.

It is illegal to negligently store a firearm and authorities were investigating if that was the case, Drucker said.

“That law was enacted because of accidental shootings involving children,” he said.

“Preliminary reports are that this appears to be accidental,” Hecht said. “The circumstances are being investigated.”
