U.S. Navy helicopter crashes in Red Sea with five people aboard
A Navy helicopter from a squadron based at North Island Naval Air Station in Coronado has crashed in the Red Sea with five people aboard, the Navy announced Sunday.
The status of the five is still being determined and search and rescue efforts are underway by helicopters and small boats from the carrier strike group Nimitz, the Navy said.
The MH60S Knighthawk, from the Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 6, was operating from the San Diego-based guided-missile destroyer William Lawrence, part of the Nimitz group.
The Nimitz was sent into the Red Sea as tensions increased between the U.S. and Syria over the use of chemical weapons in the Syrian civil war.
The helicopter crash was not due to hostile action, the Navy’s 5th Fleet said.
