2 Primary Races Are Finally Decided

Assemblyman Ronald S. Calderon (D-Montebello) defeated Assemblyman Rudy Bermudez (D-Norwalk) by 305 votes to win the Democratic nomination in the 30th state Senate District, Los Angeles County election officials said Wednesday.

In another race that was too close to call on election night, Inglewood City Councilman Curren Price edged Gardena City Councilman Steve Bradford by 113 votes to win the Democratic nomination in the 51st Assembly District, according to vote tallies certified by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

Bermudez and Bradford said they were considering asking for recounts.

“We’re consulting with our legal team at this point,” Bermudez said.

“We’ve been told that 305 votes is not out of the realm of turning over an election.”

Bradford said he was fielding calls from supporters who said that a recount should be done.

“They just felt it was close enough we should at least take a look at it,” he said.

The results come nearly one month after California’s June 6 primary election.

Both districts are heavily Democratic, so a victory in the Democratic primary is tantamount to winning the seat outright.

The 30th Senate District is now represented by Sen. Martha Escutia (D-Whittier), who cannot run for the seat again because of term limits.

The district includes Bell, Bell Gardens, City of Commerce, Cudahy, Huntington Park, La Mirada, Montebello, Norwalk, Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs, South El Monte and Whittier, as well as parts of Los Angeles, South Gate and unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.

The 51st Assembly District is represented by Assemblyman Jerome Horton (D-Inglewood), who is also termed out.

It covers Inglewood, Hawthorne, Lawndale and Gardena, as well as parts of Los Angeles and some unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.
