City to Study Upgrade of Levees in Natomas Area
The city’s flood-control officials have agreed to spend $4.6 million to study how to upgrade weak levees in the fast-growing Natomas area.
The move comes after a February report revealed that the Natomas levees may not meet 100-year flood standards, the designation that allowed housing construction in the basin. The report found the soil so porous in some areas that floodwater could bypass seepage walls.
The Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency wants to improve those levees, fearing that the federal government could again designate Natomas a floodplain and thus halt development.
