Miss Afghanistan’s Misdirected Freedom

Share

Re “The Bikini That Got the World Talking Equality,” Nov. 20: So let me get this straight. We invaded Afghanistan to liberate women from the oppressive regime, which denied women their education and freedoms. And now Miss Afghanistan is trying to role-model that freedom for women through bikini wear. The freedom portrayed by her appearance was not of education or equality but turning women into sex objects.

Now we have both extremes. The Taliban represented the harsh covering and mistreatment of women, while Miss Afghanistan is representing the freedom of turning into a pleasure model. We need to turn away from these extremes while encouraging the proper types of freedom for Afghan women: the right for equal treatment and the right for one to be respected for who she is and not how much of her body she reveals.
