House to take up ‘In God We Trust’ resolution

The Republican-led House is expected to take up a brief foray into social values issues this week, considering a resolution that would reaffirm “In God We Trust” as the official motto of the United States.

Republicans have tried to keep the legislative focus on jobs, which is a top issue among voters. But GOP leadership has allowed floor time for conservative priorities and social issues that had been promised as part of last year’s campaign that gave Republicans the majority.

The measure from Rep. Randy Forbes (R-Va.) would reaffirm the phrase as the nation’s official motto and encourage the public display of the motto in all public buildings and public schools.

“If religion and morality are taken out of the marketplace of ideas,” the resolution reads, “the very freedom on which the United States was founded cannot be secure.”

The resolution is expected to be considered on Tuesday.
