Clinton documents to be released

The National Archives plans to release today 11,046 pages of former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton’s White House schedules.

The two-term New York senator, who is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, touts her experience in foreign policy -- saying she would be “ready on Day One” to lead the nation. That experience is based in part on her husband’s eight years in the White House.

Her rival for the nomination, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, has called on the Clintons to release copies of their tax returns, Hillary Clinton’s schedules as first lady and the list of donors who funded the William J. Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock, Ark.

“What is Sen. Clinton hiding? And what is lurking in those documents that she believes voters don’t have a right to know?” Obama communications director Robert Gibbs asked during a recent conference call with reporters.

In response, Clinton campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson has accused the Obama team of “running a campaign that is designed to tear down Sen. Clinton’s character using Republican talking points.”

The pages of documents, which the National Archives said would be posted at www.clintonlibrary.gov, include schedules from the files of Patti Solis Doyle, who was in charge of the first lady’s calendar from 1993 to 1998. She recently was relieved of her duties as Clinton’s presidential campaign manager.

“Arranged chronologically, these records document in detail the activities of the first lady, including meetings, trips, speaking engagements and social activities for the eight years of the Clinton administration,” the National Archives said in a news release.

About half the pages have redactions, which the Clinton Library and the National Archives said “pertain to the privacy interests of third parties,” such as Social Security numbers, phone numbers and private addresses.

In addition, schedules for the first 19 days of January 1993, before President Clinton’s inauguration, are closed to the public.

The Clintons have said they would release some of their tax returns by April 15.
