Candor Should Not Disqualify Nominee

Share

“Skewed Picture of America” (editorial, June 30) calls Alabama Atty. Gen. William H. Pryor Jr. unqualified to become a federal appeals court judge because of honest views he has expressed about the role of the federal government in public education, the control of street crime, protection of the environment and state and local voting procedures, as well as about the basis for Supreme Court rulings of the past couple of generations on abortion, a state’s right to legislate morality and what the 1st Amendment actually says about religion.

It is clear that, with the lack of editorial challenge to any one of his positions (most of which appear very reasonably based on constitutional interpretation), The Times’ main concern is that he is not “politically correct.”
