Dodgers ‘disappointed’ in Yasiel Puig for speeding case arrest

A day after Yasiel Puig was arrested in Florida for allegedly driving 110 mph in a 70-mph zone, the Dodgers issued a statement in which they said they were “disappointed” in the 23-year-old right fielder.

“We have spoken to Yasiel and made it clear that we, as an organization, are very disappointed in his recent behavior,” the statement reads. “This is a very serious issue to us and we will continue to educate him and strive to further develop his growth off the field and as a member of this community.”

The arrest came less than two months after Puig had speeding-related charges dropped in Tennessee.

Puig, who makes his off-season home in Miami, was driving westbound on Interstate 75 between Naples and Fort Lauderdale on Saturday morning when he was pulled over, said Lt. Greg Bueno of the Florida Highway Patrol. Puig was handcuffed and taken to Collier County jail, Bueno said. Officers on the scene described Puig as cooperative in their report.

Dodgers officials have warned Puig on multiple occasions about his driving, especially after he was arrested in April while playing for the Dodgers’ double-A affiliate in Chattanooga, Tenn. Puig, who allegedly was driving 97 mph in a 50-mph zone, was charged with speeding, reckless driving and driving without proof of insurance. The charges were dismissed last month, in large part because of community service he performed in Los Angeles.
