Kwan Trying Out New Coach

Michelle Kwan will resume competition in the Campbell’s International Figure Skating Classic on Oct. 5 at Daytona Beach, Fla., under the guidance of a new coach, former professional skater Scott Williams.

She said Thursday she had worked with Williams the last two weeks but that she had not made a lasting commitment.

“We’ll just see how it goes,” said Kwan, who ended a decade-long relationship with Frank Carroll a year ago. “It would be foolish for me to say it will be long term when I don’t know how he is at competitions or how it will work out.”

The Daytona event, in which skaters will perform free-skate programs, also features Salt Lake City gold medalist Sarah Hughes and men’s medalists Alexei Yagudin and Evgeni Plushenko of Russia and Tim Goebel of the U.S., who trains in El Segundo. Irina Slutskaya of Russia, the Olympic silver medalist and world champion, withdrew because of an unspecified illness.

Kwan, a Torrance native who lives in the South Bay, has been pondering her competitive future since she finished third at Salt Lake City, her second successive Olympic disappointment. She has not committed to any other events this season.
